I’ve learned that Robert Slimbach — one of our greatest living type designers — is being let go by Adobe. He’s near retirement, but I’m disappointed he’s being shown the door rather than leaving on his own terms. To me, it’s more evidence of Adobe’s waning interest in original type development.

This is honestly so stupid and reminds me of the whole ‘delve’ saga we had a while ago. Literary decay will ensue if we hand over ownership of perfectly normal punctuation and vocabulary to AI simply because it happens to overuse some of them. AI is a bad writer because it learnt from bad writers. And as @joeld says here, ‘you need to read more!’

AI is right about em-dashes

Humans invented them and should keep using them.

Artificial Unintelligence

A great essay by @vhbelvadi on why we write notes and why AI tools are a hinderance to our thinking process when mixed with note-taking.

> "In sum, AI can summarise for you, it can simplify for you (hopefully correctly), but it can never understand for you."

We are so inured to using AI that we believe we need it

A few thoughts on the rise of Reform in the recent local elections in the UK.

People who vote for Reform are not becoming disillusioned and casting their votes for other parties in subsequent elections. Where Reform wins, it is continuing to win.

The UK should be alarmed about Reform • V.H. Belvadi

Fascist change does not jump on society, it creeps up on it

We witnessed history. This juvenile display by a sitting head of state is a turning point in international relations.

It is important that other world leaders now speak up against this charade to prevent normalising it.

Fascism grows before a weak opposition.

#indiewebcarnival (January 2025 edition) on the topic of ”friction” is already over!

The host @vhbelvadi wrote a nice little round-up with some of the highlights from each entry: https://vhbelvadi.com/indieweb-carnival-roundup-2025

Definitely worth checking out, it's great to read different perspectives on the topic.

And, in case you've missed it, here is my entry: https://dominikhofer.me/friction-mindfulness

IndieWeb Carnival Jan ’25 roundup • V.H. Belvadi

I wrote something for the #IndieWeb carnival this month, hosted by @vhbelvadi

https://ishan.co/small-web-frictionless/

I took a different direction here because I just can't shake the feeling that we're ceding the term fricionless to large companies when indie web is the real frictionless web, at least it terms of user experience.

IndieWeb Carnival: Small Web is Frictionless

My thoughts on Frictionless Web and why I think small web is truly frictionless
