So much this. Imo constitutional rights and ancient private law principles of property, contract, and tort are the more important half of an open society than elections and representation. Both halves are important but democracy is a necessary and not at all sufficient condition.
An observation: It’s interesting how people say “democracy” when they obviously mean “liberalism.” Is it really such a dirty word?
