A lot of smart outlets develop problems over time from the inductive surge current on electric motor startup (air conditioner, fridge, dehumidifier). The current ratings in ads are generally for resistive loads. Inductive load limits can be 30% less.
This inspired me to go into science.

Tired light theory requires:

Distant galaxies to be blurry (they aren’t)
Events in faraway galaxies to happen at the same pace as nearby events (they don’t. Time is dialated just like frequency is redshifted)
Cosmic background radiation would not be a black body
Constants c, G, and hbar would change through the history of the universe.

Is the Universe 13.8 or 26.7 billion years old?

For many years, cosmologists have claimed the Universe is 13.8 billion years old. A new paper says no, it's 26.7 billion. How do we decide?

Big Think

If anyone is wondering how google is doing, it is giving incorrect answers to the query “How old is the Universe?”

Instead of serving up scientific consensus (just shy of 14 billion years) it is latching onto recent media coverage of a questionable study (tired light, time-dependent coupling constants) claiming a much larger figure.

Notably, it gives me the right answer from an incognito window. But elevating popularity metrics over scientific consensus is a real problem!

I think highest/easiest ROI would be devices that alert or avoid bad events.

  • freezer/fridge temp monitors to avoid food going bad (circuit failure, door cracked open, part failure)
  • water leak detectors (water heater, bathroom, sink)
  • open door alarms ( garage door left open overnight, fence door left open that lets dog out)
  • doorbell camera/microphone (unwanted visitors)
