I'm over at https://mas.to/@uoou now.

Hello, I'm Drew.

I'm agoraphobic so I live in my computer.

Interested in people making and sharing things, political economy, unixy stuff, history, art, games (board and computer), coding shitty things in bash.

@sinvega Have you seen Kevin can F**k Himself? It does interesting things with the 90s shitty sitcom husband thing. I’ve not seen the second season yet but I enjoyed the first.

I've been running mail servers and writing email software since the dialup days of 1995. I guess by today's trends, that could brand me a holdout.

But we're still hosting mail for hundreds of company domains across dozens of mail servers, all in a nicely packaged system that's always just an "apt install" away.

The landscape has changed over time, and, yes, it is annoying dealing with the imbalance that the behemoth mail providers represent these days.

But there's a lot to be said for not bargaining away your digital autonomy.

I saw @mwl selling his "Run Your Own Mail Server" book and jumped to pick up a copy. Not so much because I had a need for it (though it'll be interesting to compare notes!), but because I strongly support the idea that email is still a shared ecosystem and love that Michael is sharing the knowledge to encourage folks to continue to participate.

Long live the open Internet.

@anjune Yeah, I don’t think they’re related, but they’ve come together at the perfect time to ensure that all TV and movies can only be shit.

@anjune I’m very tired of the superheroes and the effect they’ve had on all narrative media. And the complete conflation of politics with culture.

I think that’s part of why I’ve been seeking out the good shows from before Marvel really got going. The Sopranos and I’ve literally just finished the last episode of Deadwood. Which latter I’d strongly recommend. Every line of dialogue is a fucking delight and it actually had something to say about things.

But yeah, ‘nerd culture’, as its popularly understood, is a fucking embarrassment.

In light of the Internet Archive losing its appeal to hachette, I just wanted to point out some websites you should avoid:

* https://annas-archive.li/
* https://downmagaz.net/
* https://ebook-hunter.org/
* https://forcoder.net/
* https://freemagazines.top/
* https://liber3.eth.limo/

If you were to download books from these websites, you might cut into hachette's more than three billion dollars of annual revenue. So make sure to avoid those websites and the following:

* https://libgen.is/
* https://oceanofpdf.com/
* https://pdfroom.com/
* https://pdfstop.com/
* https://pdfdrive.to/
* https://pdfmagazines.club/
* https://sci-hub.se/
* https://singlelogin.re/
* ... or any of the other sites listed at https://rentry.co/megathread-books

Anna’s Archive: LibGen (Library Genesis), Sci-Hub, Z-Library in one place - Anna’s Archive

The world’s largest open-source open-data library. Mirrors Sci-Hub, Library Genesis, Z-Library, and more.

Sam Altman needs enclosure of the digital commons to make AI slop into money but the Internet Archive can't lend books for free, what an embarrassing timeline
Oh well thank fuck for that. Another one of humanity’s problems checked off.
@Annekin @ChrisMayLA6 It makes sense if your goal is to discredit public ownership.
@ChrisMayLA6 Yeah it’s been on my mind that a cynical centrist Labour government could nationalise something, intentionally run it poorly (as per 70s & 80s) and use that to tank the idea of nationalisation again for a generation or two.
hehehehehe
