Students in an Information Visualization class at Indiana University completed a "mapping participation" project for me. I received the report this week. They have created an open-source tool to collect data on event participation and easily convert it to KUMU or Gephi visualizations. In this blog article I demonstrate what's possible, by showing 1994-2015 Tutor/Mentor Conferences. This graphic shows two of them. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2025/12/take-another-look-at-tutormentor.html

Are any of you connected to people involved w volunteer-based #tutor #mentor programs? Are they on Mastodon? Please make introductions.

I led such programs for 35 years, from 1975 to 2011. My blog aims to help similar programs get the ideas and resources each needs to operate for that long.

I've shared my lists of #Chicago #tutor #mentor programs since 1994. Who in your city has a similar map/list? I use this to draw attention & resources to every program. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2025/06/help-volunteer-based-youth-tutor-mentor.html

Dig deeper into this visual essay. More about "Network of Purpose". Duplicate in your own community. https://danielbassill319958.substack.com/p/more-about-network-of-purpose

I've been creating visual essays since the 1990s to help people understand the strategies my organization was creating to make mentor-rich youth serving organizations available to K-12 youth in all high poverty areas of cities like Chicago.

I aggregated a few links to articles about the Ken Burns documentary, "The American Revolution" and shared them at https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2025/11/take-new-look-at-founding-of-usa.html

If you know of sites with a broader collection, just share the link. I can add some to my article.

Here are 2 articles on my blog with "Tips for starting and sustaining a volunteer-based #tutor #mentor program". Based on my own experiences. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/search/label/planning-a

Research keeps showing too few programs in #Chicago and other places.

I wrote about the Global Futures Society Network map in this #Tutor #Mentor article. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2025/11/map-your-network-new-example.html

I highlighted the GIS map version, which has the same type of interaction features as the KUMU version.

Take a look.

I wrote about this Global Futures Society Network Map in my #Tutor #Mentor blog. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2025/11/map-your-network-new-example.html

What does this have to do with volunteer-based tutoring and/or mentoring?

Everything. The program represents a network. Can it visualize that? The program needs a support system. Can it visualize that.

Many programs are needed across big cities like that. Can the Mayor visualize that?

Read the article. Share it. If you know of people doing this work, share their link.

The Tutor/Mentor Connection, which we formed in 1993, was designed to increase media stories about volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs in Chicago. On this page you can see some of those stories. https://tutormentorexchange.net/news-pr
I shared my #EnouthIsEnouth graphic in this Substack article. I've been using this for many years. https://danielbassill319958.substack.com/p/enough-is-enough-f49
