Chicago software person. Charismatic megafauna. Father figurine. The Internet I remember looked a lot like Mastodon.
Feels good to start over.

@fraying this is extremely important, and thank you for making this point!

There is another side to it: it's easier for different industry lobbyists to argue against "content creators' rights" and to try to relegate them to a lesser category of copyright than what the corporations "create" and "promote".

Think "user generated content" instead of "art", when talking about social media posts, for instance. Diluting the rights of individual artists.

@arden @fraying I used to do a lot of lobbying for open standards, copyright reform, and the like, and each time corporate ghouls used the term "user generated content" I tore them a new one.

It's such a clear case of hypocrisy. If we should protect all authors' rights, and then it doesn't matter if it's Disney's "Mickey Mouse" or ursulav's "The Biting Pear of Salamanca" https://www.deviantart.com/ursulav/art/The-Biting-Pear-of-Salamanca-29677500

Due to popular demand, and the ever-increasing net to explain Mastodon to newbies as every instance is being bombarded with new users...

I've gone ahead and create a video tutorial that should help folks get to grips with all of this platform's particulars:

Random Masto thought: I see a lot of people try to replace "instance" with different, non-technological metaphors to try to explain it, but honestly, the term I've had the most success with is "server", especially with people used to playing stuff like Minecraft where it's common for people to run their own servers for online multiplayer. I've never read up on the technicals enough to know if this is exactly correct, but.
