Sony has now shipped 92.2 million PS5 consoles.

Sony shipped 8 million PS5 consoles over the recent holiday quarter. While that’s down 16 percent year-over-year, it’s still nearly the same amount of PS4 shipments Sony managed during the same period of its lifecycle. In fact, VGC points out that the PS5 has been pretty much aligned with Sony’s PS4 shipments in the months since its launch.

Microsoft confirms boot issues with its latest Windows 11 update.

Microsoft has confirmed that the boot failures with its January 2026 Windows 11 update are limited to “commercial” PCs and happened due to the December 2025 update failing to install and PCs being left in an “improper state.” It’s now investigating why PCs managed to get into this state in the first place. Microsoft’s first Windows 11 update of 2026 has been a mess.

Nvidia makes modding old games even more powerful.

Nvidia is launching Remix Logic today, a new RTX Remix update that allows modders to add dynamic graphics effects inside games.

You’d normally need source code or engine access to do this, but Remix Logic will let modders easily control weather systems and add new gameplay systems in classic games. It’s available today through Nvidia’s desktop app.

Winapp is Microsoft’s new command line utility for developers.

Microsoft is releasing Windows App Development CLI (winapp) in public preview today. The open-source utility is aimed at Windows app developers, to make it easier to work across multiple frameworks and toolchains. There’s a big technical shake up for the 2026 season, with all-new chassis, power units, and fuel regulations.

Microsoft’s first Xbox announcement of 2026 is the launch of Xbox Cloud Gaming on select Hisense and V homeOS-powered smart TVs. The Xbox app first launched on Samsung TVs, followed Amazon Fire TV devices, then select LG TVs, and now Hisense TVs. We don’t have an exact date for when the Xbox app will be available on Hisense and V homeOS-powered TVs, but Microsoft says it’s coming at some point in 2026.

RAM prices are out of control!

I knew RAM was being sold at market prices just like a catch-of-the-day at a seafood restaurant, but in the UK they must love really expensive lobster or something. One retailer, Curry’s Business, is selling 8GB of DDR4 for £120,000 ($159,000). If you add the UK’s VAT tax on it’s £144,000 ($190,000). I’ll take two, please.

Microsoft makes Zork open-source.

The original Zork I, Zork II, and Zork III games are now available under the MIT license. Microsoft, Xbox, and Activision have teamed up to preserve the clever Z-Machine engine that powered the Zork games and allow students, teachers, and developers to study the code and learn from it. Microsoft has also worked with Jason Scott, from the Internet Archive, to grant this open-source license.
