Need advice for buying first hardware - Lemmy.World

Im interested in starting to self host and ive seen that people use old computers, but Im wondering if these specs are overkill: Intel Core i7 2600K Processor 24GB RAM 800GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Graphics Card Its a used computer, and I was going to offer 150-170? They are asking 250. Things I want to try are: -cloud storage -immich for photo backup -jellyfin -game servers like enshrouded, vrising, palworld, etc Thanks in advance for any advice.

So far the pros are ethics, music quality, and you can buy drm free music from them if you want. Cons are they’re smaller than the other companies so their catalog isn’t as complete (they had like 85% of my Spotify music), and their app is not as feature complete and at times buggy.

You can do the free trial and they allow you to transfer your music for free, though it may take a few days to get the link. It’s through soundbiz or something.

Personally I think I’ll try them out for a bit longer, the missing music is the more niche stuff. Otherwise I’ll do more research into tidal and decide.

I’ve been testing out tidal and Qobuz. Tidal is an easier switch from Spotify but I’ve seen that their ceo is also not great/a Zionist. I haven’t seen too much though so idk. If anyone has info either way that’d be helpful. If I’m gonna switch for ethical reasons I might as well go all the way. That said Qobuz has a noticeable increase in sound quality
To be fair, the in game cosmetics do look pretty good in d4. I doubt they’ll add anymore until an expansion though
From the reviews I’ve seen, everyone can enjoy it. I hope that’s true because it looks good

I wasn’t trying to defend blizzard at all. Just saying that the big budget/multiplayer games are all kinda in a shit place.

And I agree using fomo is fucked up. But I do think it’s fair that they need money to continue to make content and upkeep servers. Though they’ve definitely gotten greedier and greedier.

Too soon

It sucks, but it’s also not just blizzard. So many games are trying to keep you playing 24/7.

And say what you will about halo infinite/343 but at least you can complete the battle pass even after the season. It’s not perfect but it’d be nice if that was adopted by more games.

Seems like an overall bad change. Feels like these platforms are trying to drive themselves into the ground all at once.
