@ZachWeinersmith watching people talk about the Artemis II mission, so many of them use language that implies it's *very important* for humans to achieve the status of an interplanetary civilization. It's never stated directly, though, just vaguely gestured at or taken for granted as a baseline assumption.

Has anyone made a robust and detailed case for human expansion to the stars? Or even just to Mars? I read your book, but don't recall that particular argument showing up.

I have a few useful heuristics that I like to employ:

1) Is the information I'm seeking going to change my behavior? If not, why am I pursuing it? If <latest political scandal> isn't going to change how I vote or volunteer, what value is there in knowing about it?

OVERPOPULATION PANIC!

If you read enough classic science fiction from the 60s and 70s, you’ll eventually notice a pattern: many authors seem really, really concerned about overpopulation. And not a vague “oh that’s a thing that might happen someday” type of worry but a “scientists will have to reconfigure humanity to be baseline homosexual to constrain population growth” level of concern.

@dys_morphia Goodreads won't let me post links, but make sure you watch this "scientific presentation" by Peter Watts about vampires sometime. No spoilers in it, so I don't think it matters if you view it before, during, or after Blindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEOUaJW05bU

@dys_morphia I saw your review of the Book of the New Sun on goodreads last year and resolved to finally finish it. I've read the first half, but I keep feeling like I'm missing something, as it's not really grabbing me like other novels do. Very curious to see what he second half holds and if it'll ever click (I hope it does!)

A masterpiece of science fantasy that may be completely lost on me.
