@danhon i feel like "it wasn't given the funding it needed" and "guess which bit of congress didn't think it should exist" are the same thing and are the root cause for a lot of DOGE not being entirely wrong.

the revolution isn't going to come from unlimited clean power or faster than light travel. it will be when someone figures out how to convince the electorate that these "unsexy" fixing the government for the better things are important and helpful.

Just FTR. The backdoor code was inserted only under very specific circumstances in the build process. Once the problem was identified and after initial analysis made it clear how it worked, immediate action was taken in a coordinated fashion. Affected builds/packages were removed, update systems for affected distributions started delivering forced downgrades. Users of these systems were informed. This all happened in public, in transparent and open ways. All in the first 24 hours. I tip my hat.

So if I’m reading this¹ correctly a three year deep-cover operation to backdoor the entire planetary infosphere was blown because one person noticed that their tests suddenly ran a fraction of a second slower?

This is some ā€œdo you remember where you were back in 2024 when you first heard aboutā€¦ā€ level shit.

I love how the world in general resolved that RSS/Atom was too nerdy and also that blogs were too hard to follow and Google shut down Reader because: only nerds amirite?

… and then newsletters took off but now everyone follows too many and so there is a whole class of app that offers to aggregate your newsletters into an easy to follow, easy to read form, presenting your newsletter articles to you in a sort of… I dunno… feed?

Everything devolves to email in the end.
