Octopus Energy posted me a 321 A4 page electricity bill printed out on paper as a physical 5cm thick package (on their "Agile tariff" the rate changes every half hour, so there are 48 line items per day). I enquired as to why they'd done that?
Apparently they tried to email it first, but the 15 MB email exceeded my email server's size limit, so they posted a hard copy instead.
Last week we piled our family into the used EV that we bought last year and took the overnight ferry to Dieppe in Normandy, then drove the 600 km to my brother's house in Dordogne. The "IECharge" rapid charger network only cost €0.25/kWh, I assume they keep costs down by connecting to the HV grid, since all the sites which we visited are on the edges of towns next to substations which looked a bit like this...

@TransitionShow episode 245 includes info on the ongoing work which will allow 0% gas power to be used in similar situations in future.
GB grid electricity has been pretty green for the past few data (sunny, breezy and demand dropping due to less heating with milder weather). Wholesale balancing market price has been quite bouncy... Data visualisation courtesy of

On the other hand, the house is still standing, so I suppose I should consider that a big win.
Start of the evening peak of electricity consumption in Britain, an unseasonable Atlantic depression has brought windy conditions, so only 8.8% gas power generation. More wind generation is available, but has been turned off (curtailed) due to limited transmission cable capacity and grid stability. Upgrades planned for the coming years should finally see all of the fossil fuel plants turned off in similar circumstances, while increases in offshore wind capacity, should make this commonplace.
Most of today I get paid for using electricity it seems. Not really sure what to do - it's summer and our water heating is gas. Turning on fan heaters in the garden feels wrong.
