In July 2025 , I went to the battle in Mandalay, Thabeikkyin Township, and took photos there. It was a frontline where forces from the People’s Defense Force (PDF) under Pyin Oo Lwin District Battalion 2, All Burma Students’ Democratic Front, PDF 515, and Sagaing Region People’s Defense Forces joined the fight.

They are civilians who have come to learn as much as they can about how to protect themselves from airstrikes. As the junta’s air attacks increasingly target civilians, the only practical way for them to survive such danger for now is by building bomb shelters. Due to the high costs, it remains difficult for every household to have its own bomb shelter.
This event is organized by the Shwebo District’s People Defense Force, Battalion 12.

These images capture moments from a joint military training held in Shwebo District, where People’s Defense Forces and Local Defense Forces came together under a unified command. The training was organized by the People’s Defense Force Battalion 12 of Shwebo District.

1. The trainees seen here are undergoing military training. Since the military coup in 2021, Sagaing Region has been one of the earliest areas to rise in armed resistance. Today, it has formed organized units of the People’s Defense Forces.

2. The trainees are practicing night operations. As battles can break out under any circumstances, they train in various formations and conditions to prepare for every situation.

3. This trainee is conducting a headcount during formation. The joint military training in Shwebo District has now concluded, marking the end of the program.
