This week I’ll be doing a lecture about my work with the queer refugee community in Kenya, something that I am very passionate about and it’s been a big part of my work over the past decade. As an undergraduate course on Health Equity, I’ll only be introducing international human rights protections guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I’ve enjoyed putting together this lecture because human rights are surprisingly seldom discussed in public health education.

I just spent 30 minutes on the phone to cancel a reservation at Marriott. I had to be transferred 3 times. Why? Because I couldn’t provide my “Bonvoy” number. I’ve never stayed at a Bonvoy and I never ended that number on my membership. My Marriott number was attached to an email I haven’t used in 10 years, so I couldn’t access that. Regardless… why do I need to provide a membership number to cancel my hotel reservation? Why was that so needlessly complicated?
