Zotero 7: Reference Manager Update

Zotero 7 recently launched with a major refresh so I figured it’d be a good idea to do a review of my reference manager workflow.  I’ve tried all of the major reference managers out there and each time I’ve come back to Zotero. It’s open source, continually updated, works seemlessly with Word, has a great range of useful plugins, and it’s free.

Managing Lab Communication: Slack and WhatsApp

Developing and managing a research lab is one of the greatest difficulties I’ve found as a professor. As a social scientist its not as common and I’ve had to turn to my colleagues in engineering for guidence. But the idea and function of a lab doesnt translate the same. In Anthropology we dont collaborate on large multi-authored papers, they dont write in LaTax, and we're not used to realtime collaborative communication…

Noteplan

Last month, I incorporated Twos into my workflow. It’s a great to-do app but I realized I needed a little more versatility in my workflow. One of the big strengths of Twos is that I have a clean sheet every day and I can do weekly reviews pretty easily. I dont have to worry about a long sheet of todos piling up.

Summer Research and Semester Writing: Lessons from Dr. Gerald Horne

As summer comes to a close and Im preparing to transition back into teaching, I came across an older post I wrote about the balancing writing and research from a prolific academic, Dr. Gerald Horne. As the John J. and Rebecca Moores Chair of History and African American Studies at the University of Houston, Horne has written 15 monographs over the course of his career and publishes regularly in…

Student and Teacher Discounts

Every year around this time, I do an audit of my recurring subscriptions to see what expenses I can cut and new things I may be interested in. This is particuarlly important around the start of the school year when people start new programs, move locations, and just want to gear up for the new year. I always tell people to check for discounts with their cellphone service provider and, if you live in a college town, check for back-to-school…

Strengthen Your Writing: Apps to Improve Grammar and Vocabulary

Writing is one of those skills that everyone is expected to have but rarely formally taught. Outside of a traditional English class, it's just expected that you'll learn the mechanics of good writing. But what is good writing? The "tenets" of good writing are infinitely complex, and each field has its own style. Scientific writing, for example, tends to be concise, straightforward, and often accompanied by…

Pens and the Beauty of Analog Writing

As a writer, I’ve nerded out of over the feel of a good pen. I’ve tried them all: ballpoint, gel, rollerball, felt-tip, and more recently, fountain. There is no silver bullet, my preference changes with time and context but certain pens just feel good and cause me to take the time to focus on what I’m writing. Thus, these are the pens I’m currently working with:

How to use AI as an Academic - THE PROFESSIONAL STUDENT

I recently came across this post on Chat-GPT Prompts for Academics and I’ve been finding a lot of people suggest using Chat GPT for writing and rewriting. I’m still hesitant to use AI to write text — although I guess you could count Grammarly — but it works for some people, so I used this […]

My New To-do List App: Twos App - THE PROFESSIONAL STUDENT

I’ve been testing a new to-do list app for a while now, and I’m hooked on Twos App. I’ve always had an issue taking notes and to-dos quickly on the go. I’ve been using Drafts App and Todoist as my note-taking and to-do list apps on my phone for a few years now. But sometimes […]
