@Taco_lad@sebastian@pluralistic I bought a Sony Blu-ray player a few years back because it was the only one that fitted my needs but other than that I still look for alternatives where I can.
@sebastian@pluralistic As others have said, it installed a root kit which hid files based on name from Windows. Of course malware took advantage of that. I didn’t buy Sony products for 10 years in protest.
@djlink Those NEWS systems were not cheap, but I suppose Sony was trying to compete with Sun and SGI. Because the audio subsystem on the SNES was made but Sony, the official audio editing tools were also on the NEWS system, including the tool to compress samples into the custom format. It took for ever to run, and I wrote a compressor that ran on the SNES hardware in under a second for a typical sample.
@falsafa@wonkothesane@ak474000@tchambers@thisismissem@Vivaldi@jeffjarvis The problem is that if even a small % of Microsoft/Google users took up a potential Mastodon offer they would dwarf Mastodon’s current user base and these companies would gain a lot of power. We don’t want it to become like email where it is impossible to run your own server as the big boys just block you as spam.
@wonkothesane@ak474000@tchambers@thisismissem@Vivaldi@jeffjarvis This worries me too. Neither Google or Microsoft have much of a presence in social media and they might decide that offering Mastodon to all their email users is worth a shot. If either got traction that could seriously distort the fediverse.
@davidribes@Michele@kathygriffin@jeffjarvis@timbray Part of the problem of that is that people don’t like to curate. The decision to follow/not follow is the most that the majority are willing to do. If you create a tuneable algorithm then there needs to be some defaults and those defaults would have to be set to give the best general experience, as very few will ever change those defaults. Who then picks those defaults?
Can I #5thingsaboutmyWIP for SF: My book has: 1- very large stinging insects (but they’re mostly nice) 2- a giant rock princess 3- a sentient space station 4- murder mysteries 5- a blaseball Easter egg.
