Like many queer Orthodox Jews, 25-year-old Herschel Siegel struggled with teachings that paint LGBTQ identity as an ‘abomination,’ Mordechai Levovitz writes in a new opinion for the Forward.

"Herschel was a gay man in a world that made no place for queer people. He was loved and will be missed," Levovitz writes.

"There are thousands of Jewish queer youth in the Orthodox community. We must do better. Do not look away."

Herschel Siegel, who died by suicide last week, is only the latest queer Orthodox youth to be harmed by Jewish teachings.

A new survey from the @TrevorProject found that 41% of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year.

Data from Jewish Queer Youth's intake assessment show that number closer to 70% among youth growing up in Orthodox families.

The Forward's @ArnoRosenfeld visited Hawara on a trip arranged by @btselem, an Israeli human rights organization, who also translated most interviews from Arabic to English.

“I don’t think they will come and throw us out,” said Abu Assad said, who runs the Howwara Country resort complex.

“But they’re encouraging the settlers to attack, and do what they want, so that we leave on our own.”
