This CNN story, describing DHS' attempt to rewrite the rule on Congressional oversight, is fairly insane. It suggests the change is due to "run-ins" with ICE. It doesn't mention that Ras Baraka is suing for wrongful arrest, much less that Newark is suing. edition.cnn.com/2025/06/19/p...

@AkaSci I think elons politics are messing with spacex progress

They used to use idealism about space colonization to motivate people, but now that seems to be weakening

@davidho there’s some economic value to mars nonetheless though, like using the saberier reaction (inverse combustion) you can easily create fuels and oxygen on the surface which could be helpful for stuff in the asteroid belt and just general space exploration

That’s really long term, but even in the short term the advertising value of space is huge

Last year Columbia sportswear spent 20 million to put there logo on a lunar lander

@osm_tech they literally just could’ve torrented it

Unfortunately the #OpenStreetMap wiki is very slow today. We are fighting an aggressive web scraper bot. 10,000 of IPs involved. Randomised User-Agent. Ignoring robots.txt #aibot #ddos

Update: Fixed. We've been able to mitigate the bot traffic. #fail2ban

Remember how Y2K was going to lead to blackouts, bank runs and worse?

Well, it didn't. We had a deadline. We invested somewhere from $300 to $500 billion(!), and things turned out fine.

Climate change has no Y2K deadline. That's what makes it even harder to deal with

Climate change is both predictable and unpredictable. We don't need certainty to know it's a crisis

When the powerful profit and the public pay, it’s an oligarchy.

@unsaturated @davidgerard and the results that I’m judging it by are people I Russia paying for proton mail with bitcoin to anonymously send and receive emails without the threat of the Russian government getting in the way.

Words matter.

The Trump regime did not "deport" a 2-year-old U.S. Citizen of Latino ethnicity—the Trump regime knowingly *Human Trafficked* a 2-year-old U.S. Citizen of Latino ethnicity.

That isn't just a violation of US Constitutional rights, it's a violation of international human rights law. In a just society the people responsible for this crime would face criminal prosecution. That is what should happen here.
