First Builds of Arcalibre 0.0.1

Last month, we said that one of the main goals of the rereading Project in 2026 would be to get pre-alpha builds of Arcalibre up and running. Though it's been a long process getting there, today, we're happy to make the very first builds of Arcalibre 0.0.1 available. [...]

rereading In the New Year

It's 2026 already, and not even the first day of the new year. For the rereading Project, that means a chance to share some of the exciti...

@vonnieda @zkat Calibre's adoption of AI was a deep betrayal, and also Kovid Goyal's work for almost twenty years is a massive gift that we continue to be grateful for.

Both things can be true.

rereading: because books are art, and art is labor

@vonnieda You seem to have badly misread the criteria. If you're interested in getting involved, reading what's already there is a great start!

@vonnieda Our use of `just` is under reconsideration given what has come to light about AI tainting; thanks for raising that!

More generally, it is not wrong to have principles and hold to them. Open source is and always has been a political project. The rereading Project is no exception.

Remove the use of `just`

As per discussions at https://codeberg.org/gen-ai-transparency/open-slopware/, `just` should be avoided as tainted due to its endorsement of MCP. Since Arcalibre is quite young, it's a good opportunity to remove `just` before it gets too entrenched in our build system. This will also require u...

@vonnieda We don't think "witch hunt" is a fair characterization; the term "tainted" has long been used in the F/OSS community to refer to incompatible licensing.

In the same way, the rereading Project has been very clear about what our principles are, and why AI adoption of any kind is inconsistent with the user-, labor-, and art-focused goals of the project.

From that perspective, we agree with the list and its goals.

Proposal for project charter

This PR introduces a proposed charter for the **rereading** Project; if approved, this charter will form the basis for governance on all software and service development, social media activity, and other activities under the **rereading** Project.

Avoiding AI in your open source software can be really difficult — it seems like it's everywhere lately. Thankfully, @zkat put together a great list of projects to avoid, as well as possible alternatives.

We're honored that Arcalibre is listed as an AI-free alternative to Calibre — we're working as hard as we can to live up to that goal!
