Me: An adult man dated and married a child and that's why I don't want to uplift this anymore. We can celebrate the landmark victory without uplifting this predatory man.

Someone in my network: Hey! My grandpa...

Why do people of privilege think their family is exempt or that I'm somehow wrong in my judgment because their family was problematic? I said what I said. If your grandpa was an adult when he started a relationship with your child-grandma, he's a predator too. 🤷🏻

“The evils of capitalism are as real as the evils of militarism and the evils of racism […] The fact is that capitalism was built on the exploitation and suffering of Black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor—both Black and white, both here and abroad.”

Whew! Love these quotes that Vu Le pulled out for MLK Day as well as his explanations for how it applies profoundly to the nonprofit industrial complex. https://nonprofitaf.com/2023/01/7-often-ignored-mlk-quotes-to-ground-our-work-of-fighting-for-equity-and-justice/

7 often-ignored MLK quotes to ground our work of fighting for equity and justice

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Those of us who are in nonprofit, philanthropy, and other fields focused on making the world better rely on his words as a beacon for our work. Which is why thi…

UPDATE: I'm glad to report that while they chose once again not to respond to my free education, they have updated their form. They have (rightfully) decided that they didn't need to know peoples' gender and have instead included the following in their form:

In the course of the year, given all the information I gave them and all the time they had, they decided not to learn one single thing about gender variance, transgender or nonbinary identity, or how to affirm people.

That's pretty bad and it tells me all I need to know about how intersectional their "diverse" candidate program is.

If this is how you function as an organization, learn now. You're already behind.

Not perfect, not taking into account all the info I gave them, but definitely better.

So, fast forward to today, I get the email form again and guess what!

5. "Transgendered" is not a word. Transgender is. Transgender people, etc.
6. Transgender people can identify as a woman, a man, nonbinary, or other. It is not its own category, but an umbrella term for anyone who doesn't identify as cisgender.

I didn't think to mention if these questions were necessary at all or how it's unnecessary to say "I identify as" instead of "I am," but I should have.

After I sent that, they never responded to me, but they did change their form to this:

3. There are many different gender identities, and it might be better to leave the question as an open question. People can identify as agender/greygender, bigender/polygender, intergender/intersex, nonbinary, Two Spirit (Indigenous people only), etc. So, making four options and "other" can be otherizing.
4. There are many different pronouns, so it might be better to leave the question open as well. There is an unlimited number of neo-pronouns and some people opt not to use pronouns at all.
2. The sex or gender of a person does not determine their pronouns. A cisgender woman can choose to use she/they pronouns, etc. A nonbinary person could use neo-pronouns like xe/xem, etc. This form assumes pronouns based on gender identity when you can use any pronouns as any gender. These are two different questions: what gender do you identify as and what are your pronouns.

I gave them a free eduction via email, which they never responded to. The education included:

1. "Female" and "male" are sexes and can be considered bioessentialist. Nonbinary and transgender are gender identities. It's better to say "woman" "man" "nonbinary" "other" (if you insist on listing out and using "other" which can be otherizing)

1/20 Americans under the age of 30 now identifies as transgender and/or nonbinary. That means that organizations that have never bothered to learn about us, never mind accommodate us or make us feel affirmed or welcome are going to have to learn. You're behind. Catch up.

This reminder brought to you by a gender variant blunder for the second year in a row, conducted by the League of Conservation Voters! Last year, they created an application with this included:
