I was in SF for a few days this week. There are cars lining every street, owners paying pennies an hour if they're paying anything at all for the space and the state is tearing up homeless encampments as though the people in them have anywhere else to go or any way to get there. There are parking lots taking up half a city block all over downtown and an affordable housing crisis.

Subsidized housing and full employment programs for cars, subsidized theft and state-sanctioned cruelty for people.

“Can’t you just…” is an idiom that means “I don’t understand the work you do at all”

I've often wondered. Please boost.

The fact that:

1. This election is between a black female cop and a 34-time convicted white male felon

2. Almost every police union supports the felon

Should tell you everything you need to know about who the police really serve.

For those wondering “Why can’t •my• rep be more like Ilhan Omar?,” yeah, that’s a fair question, and it has a fair answer:

Keep in mind that even Ilhan has twice now faced tough primary challenges from a local creepazoid running a right-wring-funded-Dem “police and Israel oogity boogity!” campaign. She defeated him narrowly in 2022, soundly in 2024. Point is, every politician only has so much leeway. It's activists swaying public opinion who can buy them more.

@[email protected] Part of what leftists like about folks like Bernie and AOC and Omar (my rep!) is their solidly left-leaning constituencies mean that they can simultaneously be politicians at home while being activists on the House/Senate floor. And I do really appreciate them speaking my truths into the congressional record! But we need to recognize that being national activists the way they are is simply not a choice available with every congressional constituency.

"Administration officials have said they pulled their support from the indoor heat rule in March after discovering the rule would cost state prisons billions more dollars than the workplace safety agency estimated."

A workplace safety board bucked Gavin Newsom. Now he’s shaking it up

Two members who criticized Gov. Gavin Newsom administration’s handling of indoor heat rules have been demoted or removed.

Some important reminders of history and the reality of our society’s power structures in this thread from @seachanger:

if we step (for one minute) outside our obsession with shaming individuals for the circumstances they are in, we’re forced to see Harris as someone who stood up to the police unions out of conviction and principle and a sense of duty to her own promises. California’s Democratic Party mafia, enforced by white women, then broke her political knees this is not just about Kamala Harris, this is about patriarchy, white supremacy, rampant corruption and a political party rooted in organized crime

Every time I think that the sociopathy of Silicon Valley executives like Eric Schmidt cannot be more explicit, they prove me wrong. In a single speech he made blatant statements like "employees should work like dogs and live in fear" and "our startups can and should rob everyone else blind". (But presumably heaven help you if you infringe on the IP of his companies; the theft only can flow in one direction.)
