Celebrating my Birthday Guru Style

Hello, This year I couldn’t celebrate my birthday on January 26th due to the continuous storms of rain, wind, and snow. I tried on a day with good weather, but the boar hunters wouldn’t let me reach the summit. [Warning sign of danger from the hunters] Finally, accompanied by my friend @EA7KUG, on the February16th I activated the EA7/GR-072. 72 turns on the coil. The video shows the damage caused by the storms. 73

The Hoove G/Np-024

Activated the Hoove G/NP-024 yesteday 16th feb as M6GYU/P. 41 QSOs all CW on 7Mhz and 10mhz. But:- It was rather hard going in the snow, with the exception of the forest track especially, when I struck out across the moor.. I was post holeing a lot and eventually one foot -and leg - went through a consolidated drift deep into water and filled the boot up. It was at this point I realised I should have used my touring skis.🫩🫩 I found a s...

A Long-Awaited Activation – S5/BR-024 Stari tabor

For a long time, I had been dreaming about going up to a summit and doing a SOTA activation. It was always something I wanted to do more regularly – to combine the joy of hiking with the magic of amateur radio in the open air. However, because of various obligations in life, I simply never made the time for it. More recently, due to different health-related challenges, I also wasn’t able to find the opportunity or energy to enjoy the radio hobby at all. Those “dark times” made me postpone thing...

Three Becomes Two Becomes Three

With a mystery Monday off work (don’t ask questions, just accept the mysterious gifts) and a reasonable looking weather forecast, I decided I would stick the running shoes on and head to Fife for a loop of three summits in a single day out - East Lomond (GM/SS-198), West Lomond (GM/SS-154), and Bishop Hill (GM/SS-187). This was where I’d had some of my very first experiences of Outdoor Stuff™ as an Air Cadet, doing my bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition up here many, many years back, and I figu...

Whernside without a pole

Every so often someone posts on here that they left some vital component in their car or back at home. I think what amateurs! I’d never do something like that. Well on Saturday I got to the summit of Whernside G/NP-004 and took out all the kit from my rucksack only to find there was no pole. What an idiot! Initially thinking it was going to be a disaster I wasn’t going to give up so I strung my EFHW wire between my two walking poles. The wire was no more than about a metre above the ground and ...

Double Horseshoe Pass hill activation

A day of Double Horseshoe Pass hill activation. GW/NW-042 and GW/NW-043 No snow for me when I left QTH. Once I got near to the Horseshoe Pass I could see some snow on the hills. Approach to GW/NW-042 and GW/NW-043 Parked up opposite the Ponderosa Cafe - still closed ☹ but is for sale. First hill, GW/NW-042, Moel y Gamelin Not a bad walk up. 40mins up and 40mins down. Decided to use walking poles for the walk due to the snow and ice. Stopped off for a breather and to take a pan...

GW/NW-044 - My First CW Activation - 2026-02-14

I have wanted to learn CW for a couple of years, and started learning the characters using LWCO.net, but although I learned all the characters pretty well, I never made the jump to actually start using CW on air. Last September I attended the G-QRP club buildathon and convention, and met with Enzo and Paul. Their recommendation to me was straight forward - join the CW Academy, and learn your CW craft there. So I enrolled on the winter Fundamental course, led by Buzz Tarlow, AC6AC. Although the c...

Get Goat day

Sat at 979 points, and with the second sunny day of the year, one where it was not too cold or windy too, where I am not working (I think the last sunny day was when I bumped into @M0RWX and he helped me find the end to my antenna pole), it would have been rude not to go out and go for my Mountain Goat. With 21 points remaining, I had a day out planned in my head. Drive to South Wales and do Pen y Fan, GW/SW-001 and Fan Fawr, GW/SW-005, and then do my local summit, High Vinnalls G/WB-012 for an...
