@paulrickards DC of either polarity should work but it comes with some caveats. The circuit may or may not be sensitive to the effects of using rectification diodes which have quite a voltage drop and can be a source of electrical noise. This drop can depending on the circuit also shift 0V earth to well above or below which introduces all manner of ground loop problems if the device connects to anything external that is also grounded.

@dascandy42 @oschonrock I was at Imperial College last year and spent some time in the freshman Halls. Imperial’s engineering school is on par with MIT, certainly a top 10 in the world engineering school. All EE / EEE students i spoke to told me they learnt everything they know from ‘Dave Jones’ and he was the main reason why most of them chose Electronics engineering as a degree.

Nearly everyone’s base / start level of EE knowledge was way above my generation’s (80’s/90’s) graduation level.

@paulrickards Beautiful! I recently received my first a serial port HP 7475A and will soon be exploring. Thank you for posting
@scalzi ICQ was one of the main means to communicate in lower manhattan in the days following 9/11 2001. Before most in the US had sms. Last i heard of icq was early 00’s, I associate it with the late 90’s. Sad but perfectly expressed in your post.
