haven’t read Alastair Reynolds in years, since Revelation: Space. so I was surprised at how quickly I was drawn into his pirate queen space opera and am now on the last book in the trilogy, Bone Silence. kind of sad at the thought of leaving this interesting universe.

@ssoper AI has been a very long abused term. I’ve been thru the previous “AI” Booms and Winters (well not the one in the 1950s when LISP was created). I remember hanging out at the MIT AI Lab in 1980, programming on LISP Machines. The saying even back then was “AI is whatever we don’t quite understand yet”. At one point Time Sharing computers was considered AI.

I don’t consider what’s going on with LLMs and Agents “AI” or is going to lead right to AGI. It might be a component of what eventually could be AI, but it’s also just another set of (very powerful) tools and techniques available to developers to create software cheaper, faster, better. But we’re just learning how to do that without breaking everything in the process.

It’s the AI Hype and the political / economic churn that the TechBros and Billionaires are fermenting that’s the real problem. That is also triggering some of the worst aspects of this (Over building data centers full of equipment that will probably be obsolete before they complete building them. IMHO algorithms and silicon will emerge quite rapidly that dramatically reduces the power consumption. Probably from China who is very incentivized and capable of routing around NVIDIA or the LLM companies.

Anyway I look forward to watching that movie sometime and see what their conclusions are..
