This was a very predictable outcome and fairly expected so I assume the Scottish Government were mostly keen to narrow the political playing field and maybe also keen to just check that referendums on devolved matters aren’t allowed on the basis they are about checking what the population wants.
Full judgment here and para 89 has the conclusions on self determination: https://www.supremecourt.uk/cases/docs/uksc-2022-0098-judgment.pdf
The UK Supreme Court has said Scotland does not have the right to hold a referendum on independence without permission from the UK Parliament. This was in response to a reference for a finding on devolved powers. Press summary here: https://www.supremecourt.uk/press-summary/uksc-2022-0098.html - the judgement says some interesting things about the difference between self-determination for occupied territories/colonies and secession for parts of nations (with Scotland said to be the latter).

Moderation is a hard problem.

It is an •intrinsically• hard problem. It’s not hard because of design choices or tech choices or incentives or laws or capitalism. It’s hard because humans.

Ignoring it doesn’t magically make it easy.

Grand edicts don’t magically make it easy.

AI doesn’t magically make it easy.

And federation doesn’t magically make it easy.

It’s •work•. Real work. And when that work doesn’t happen, it causes harm.

I’m thrilled that #ThickTrunkTuesday is taking off. If you love, honor & appreciate trees you’re #TreePeople & part of my tribe. .. Still hoping Adam keeper_of_books will migrate over from the bird sight, I think he may have been the one who started TTT?

I posted this photo before but here it is again in honor of all the beautiful #TreePeople here. We found each other and this is the way I feel.
