Turns out we were mislead by the packages available for the PC-98 Linux distribution Plamo. There was no need to install extra X servers, the default XFree86 shipped supports our video card out of the box - if used with "NoAccel" option.
Now, an interesting detail: a pop-up window tells us that we're running X as root which is considered a bad idea. The dialogue window offers two options:
* "Add a new user right now",
* "I'm aware, and it's none of your business"
Naturally, clicking "None of your business" makes this window disappear for good, you won't ever see it again. Modern programs should learn from this example.
