Today, 14 October, marks the 40th anniversary of the passing of Emil Gilels in 1985. Here is his appearance in Strasbourg in 1959:
On New Year’s Day 1823, Beethoven was enjoying a lively lunch with friends when he received a congratulatory card from his brother, signed with a pompous flourish: “Johann van Beethoven, Landowner.” With a sly grin, the composer grabbed a quill and fired back, “Ludwig van Beethoven, Brain Owner.”
