also, if you are looking for cheap/smaller planters for small plants/flowers and aren't particularly worried by aesthetics, go by your local liquor store and see if they have any spare 99 Buckets available. Many stores will have these as "grab buckets" of shots by the register. Drill a few holes in the bottom and they make excellent planters for smaller stuff. I get them for free from my buddy's liquor store and they're great starter pots.
