I lost a child in a school shooting (Sandy hook) in 20212 and then 90% of her things in a flood in 2024. It took lives. It came suddenly. People lost homes. We have still not recovered.
Both are political. In normal times I would write an op ed- but since we don't have real outlets anymore, listen to me.
They are political in the sense that legislation can do two things:

1). Work on the side of prevention (use evidence based public health approaches for gun safety, weather alerts, climate safety measures, roadway infrastructure, weather education, etc.)
2). Support robust systems of care after tragedy. FEMA is a care network. It needs funding. Red
Cross, etc.
Also: Flooding is not covered by private insurance. You may not believe in climate change, but
insurance companies absolutely do.
