#20albums 21: Fay Lovsky & Joost Swarte - Jopo in Mono XL
from the above, I had some (Public Enemy; Elvis) on vinyl, but CDs had soon taken over.
after my CDs were stolen, I never really started a new collection. then, 2 years ago, my mother sent me this record from the Netherlands, released on 10” vinyl. it is an expanded re-release of a CD I owned - my love for music as a teenager developed in tandem with my love for comics. the artwork is, as expected from Joost Swarte, fabulous.
and having the vinyl on my shelf started an itch - and led me eventually to finally buy a turntable again. this record is changing my life as we speak. @vinylrecords
#20albums 20: Pablo Casals - Beethoven Piano Trios
no explanation.
#20albums 19: Amsterdam Klezmer Band - Katakofti
my brother’s band, and the album of theirs I was most closely involved with - being with the band when they came to Turkey for rehearsals, performances, and the studio recordings.
it’s a great album! give it a listen sometime (and enjoy!): https://open.spotify.com/album/0gxGTZ0hJ89xV84aGdcNIO?si=nPT0Zs6yRduEi_cclQfOSA
#20albums 18: Sezen Aksu - Işık Doğudan Yükselir (Ex Oriente Lux)
my mother was an organizer of Turkish culture in the Netherlands - so gave me a route into a whole different range of musical traditions (however hard the Turkish state has tried to deny and suppress it, Turkey is ethnically and culturally extremely diverse).
Sezen Aksu, Turkey’s greatest composer of modern pop (if you know any Turkish pop you will know either one of her protégés or one of her compositions, and probably both), made this album based on the music of regions throughout Anatolia. I met my wife in Turkey, and we played this album’s song Davet at our wedding.
