Nearly 200 Russian civilian vessels show suspicious behaviour in the North Sea. Some of them have been linked to spying on seabed infrastructure since 2014. A joint investigation between Follow the Money and De Tijd mapped the most suspicious events and shows why little can be done about them. https://www.ftm.nl/artikelen/north-sea-1-suspicious-russian-ships-in-european-waters-and-havens

@alan @stadiamaps I completely agree! If you self-host, you will also have to pay for the hosting + you have to go through the hassle of setting it up and maintaining it. Mapbox is great because it is so easy to use and free initially, but it can get expensive fast. Also, AFAIK, there is no easy way to set any spending limits.
@neave I don't know the specifics of that case, but I can say that if you generate enough page impressions, it will still cost you 🤑 I am wondering though, how will switching to MapLibre fix it? Do you mean together with a cheaper provider or self-hosting of tiles? Or will it change Mapbox's way of billing?
@MichaelTBacon @alan @stadiamaps Yes absolutely! Depending on your mapping needs, there are other provider for vector tiles that are less expensive than Mapbox.

Luckily, this is not my project but I had a similar experience a while back. In my case it was just a few hundred bucks, but given that it was for a just-for-fun side-project that made no money, still an annoying experience.

If you run a project on Mapbox tiles and are worried it could break the bank, have a look at https://versatiles.org or https://protomaps.com. It's also worth noting that Mapbox offers free plans for nonprofit projects.

This, web mapping friends, is why you should seriously consider self-hosting your map tiles 👀 https://hoodmaps.com/
