For #EarthDay2023, some of our team gave a bit of an update on @FieldKitOrg development and manufacturing. It is looking like 2023 will be an exciting year! Check it out here:

Had breakfast this morning with this very large friend. Glad to see that they could enjoy their meal alongside the rest of the team.
AirDrop is so bad.
It is absolutely amazing being this remote in a rainforest. The sounds are incredible. We spent the evening exploring biofluorescence in the forest using a UV light.

I was meant to be spending the next 4 wks in the Congo rainforest w/ the @FieldKitOrg team.

Due to family health issues I had to stay at home... so I have some free time on my calendar! Hit me up if you have any strange data projects you might need a strange data person for!

I saw a dead pangolin being sold as bushmeat on the side of the road today. So depressing. ☹️
Oh god.

With #TheLastOfUs taking HBO by storm, a lot of folks have just recently learned about cordyceps fungal infections.

Shah Selbe on Instagram: "With “The Last of Us” taking HBO by storm, a lot of folks have just recently learned about cordyceps fungal infections. But this is an actual phenomenon that happens in nature. While walking through the Dja Reserve in Cameroon a few years back, I spotted it in the wild. This is ophiocordyceps unilateralis, the zombie-ant fungus. This fungus infects an ant and grows inside the ant using the ant’s own nutrients. It then hijacks the ant’s mind, forcing it to leave its nest and climb a nearby plant stem up to a height around 25 centimeters. This height is the perfect temperature and humidity for the fungus to grow. It then forces the ant to permanently lock its mandibles in place (as you can see here) and sends a long stalk through the ant’s head. From those stalks, spores emerge that then rain down the other ants below, zombifying them in turn. Over the next month, I will be at the Congo Basin Institute research station in the Dja and will keep my eye out for more of these. Swipe right for the full image."
