I work SO THAT I can take care of my family.
My family is the goal. Work is the tool.
Family is the ends, job is the means.
I try to never put the tool before the goal.
If work decisions are detrimental to my family, they are counterproductive.
Absolutely you should think about the impact of being gone. You may decide either way; absolutely it's a cost you should consider very carefully. Especially if you have kids at home - that 8yo won't be around, as an 8yo, in a few months. Their childhood will be gone and there is no way to ever bring it back. It's a real cost.
