Dorothy Gambrell (@catandgirl) created the below #comic about discovering her work was used to train #Midjourney #GenerativeAI.

We spoke to her about this comic—and the broken promises of the early web—in our most recent newsletter: https://themarkup.org/hello-world/2024/03/02/what-happens-when-your-art-is-used-to-train-ai

What Happens When Your Art Is Used to Train AI – The Markup

A conversation with web cartoonist Dorothy Gambrell on the curdled internet, labor, and how we became just numbers

My daughter, who has had a degree in computer science for 25 years, posted this observation about ChatGPT on Facebook. It's the best description I've seen:
I’m eavesdropping (well, they’re so loud I can’t ignore them) on two young startup guys at this coffee shop, a version of a conversation I’ve heard a million times. But what’s striking vs 10 or 15 years ago is… almost nothing they’re talking about is the tech. Everything is financial engineering and how to hustle the ecosystem. Nothing about products or even markets and competition, all fussing about banks and crypto and VCs. Explains a lot about my fatigue over the industry in general.
Twitter can't pay its bills. The banks that funded the acquisition can't syndicate the debt. Revenue plummeted and shows no signs of improving. There aren't even any plans to improve revenue. Stock awards are worthless.
How app changelogs should be vs. how app changelogs usually are.
The messy, secretive reality behind OpenAI’s bid to save the world

The AI moonshot was founded in the spirit of transparency. This is the inside story of how competitive pressure eroded that idealism.

Anyone on my feed has contacts in academic or industrial entomology who'd be available for a conversation about a climate restoration oriented project? DMs open.
right now, when people talk about AI, we tend to really like to lump it together into this idea of "the AI", like "the algorithm" or whatever. we all know we're being facetious when we do that, it's just fun to say, an appealing meme. obviously there are a lot of different machine learning models and approaches, but mostly "AI" is used to denote this singular type of smart-yet-stupid limerick-writer and art plagiarist, presumably made in the image of its creator, the witless and amoral tech guy

The “fun” game I've been playing is finding a code snippet from Copilot or ChatGPT, tracing that back to GitHub and asking "Why the fuck was this both a Public repository AND GPLv3? Surely they couldn't have meant to do that.”

I understand that there is a valid accusation here that this is victim blaming. I'm willing to accept that.

I haven't practiced anything bordering the occult in a very long time, but the number of Tarot decks I'm seeing created with Midjourney is giving me pause. Cleansing decks with sage after every reading is recommended, storing them in metal containers is deeply taboo, but constructing the entire deck from blended interpretations of stolen art... *that* clears the vibe check?
