Hello friends! I am back on Mastodon due to *recent events* on the bird website.
As I posted there a few minutes ago: It's become plainly obvious that Twitter under its current ownership is no longer a suitable platform for journalists or journalism. Things there are bad and only getting worse.
I'll aim to make Mastodon my primary platform for posting links to my stories, snippets of news and context, and bad jokes.
Stop asking the GOP establishment to save the GOP from Donald Trump. It can't. I explain why in my "Our Land" newsletter.

A shocker that Mark Meadows provided a false and incomplete account of the 2020 post-election period in his book? Perhaps not. But someone had to note that the newly released Meadows texts show that he is a complete fabulist. And that someone was me. Please give my latest article read and share/boost.

The oldest octopus fossil, which is 296 million years old, and pre-dates the dinosaurs.
The way things are going, this species will post-date humanity as well.
I follow back, and really appreciate boosts
Just before the invasion, #Ukraine made a deal with #Amazon #AWS to create a data warehouse for its government information and infrastructure: tax and property records, bank statements, and the like. Things that an invaded and occupied Ukraine might lose if Russia got their hands on the only copies.
They literally snuck Pelican crates full of SSDs into the country and spirited them back offshore after backing up 10 petabytes of important historic and legal records.
This paragraph, second from the end, really put a fine point on why Amazon did this: They were not beholden to, nor being held hostage by, any Russian operations...because they never had any:
Amazon didn’t have to worry about its relationship with Russia on the Snowball project. It doesn’t have one. “We didn’t have anything to turn off there,” Maxwell said. “We had never invested there. It’s a point of principle.”
Truly an amazing story from the #LATimes.

Musk's suspension of tech journalists from Twitter is, on balance, the best thing that can happen right now. Not because it's a good idea, but because it's such a transcendentally stupid move.
It highlights the vile and capricious way the new CEO and part-owner has operated.
It highlights his contempt for freedom of expression, which he claims to revere.
And it will lead to an even more rapid exodus of people who want civility and usefulness online.
