a theme i've noticed with some bad, hastily "updated" comedy writing is that they'll take a joke premised on a character doing some kinda awful behavior, play it straight, and then just have the characters apologize and "learn from" their behavior when someone else tells them it's hurtful

except... we know the comedy is premised on the characters doing bad things. they're gonna do something bad again when we need a new joke. all this does is give them immunity from being a bad person, even though they never actually grow and start considering the feelings of those around them.

i don't know if it's authors being precious about their characters or worrying that they'll be called out for writing bad people, but i think you've either gotta commit to the premise that the humor is derived from people doing awful things and let them be awful people (see: basically all cringe comedy from the last 20 years) or get jokes that don't rely on that premise
