Visiting Verona today. The amphitheatre was built around 30 AD, it held up to 30,000 spectators. It's one of the largest surviving #Roman amphitheatres and now used for opera performances.

It's World Heritage day in Germany today! In 2017 caves from the #IceAge in the Swabian Jura became UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mankind's earliest mobile art was found in those caves, e.g. the marvellous figure of the #lion man, carved in mammoth ivory ca. 40,000 years ago

Found in the Hohlenstein-Stadel cave. On display at Museum Ulm.

An impressive #Roman cavalry helmet with a face mask that was made of iron and plated with silver (Nijmegen-Kops Plateau type). The mask was attached to the iron helmet, which was covered with horse hair showing an elaborate and highly decorative hairstyle.
Helmets such as this one from the 1st century AD were used in tournaments as well as in battle. Fully masked cavalrymen certainly intimidated the enemy.

Found in Nijmegen.

Helmet and replica are on display at Museum Het Valkhof Nijmegen.
