One of the most insufferable things Kiwis do is cast aspersions on Americans for using language differently. Especially when the roots of the differences are Imperial bastardizations.

Take "barbeque". This word entered Spanish from Carribbean or Florida-area indigenous people and referred to a smoky slow cooking technique. Its modern US usage is closest to this.

If you make comments like "the rest of the world calls it (grilling) BBQ" it just shows your own ignorance.

@vahnj when I first used the internet for online discussions, all filters were off. Thankfully AFAIK no Fidonet archives exist, and Usenet only goes back so far. Many were on home BBSes.
