"The fediverse is not a place, it is the means to build a place. It’s the means to build a million different places."

Really appreciated this whole piece from @jaz

There is One Fediverse. There are a Million Fediverses.

Over the past several years I’ve listened to admins, mods, and community managers from across the decentralised social media landscape. I’ve been in the chats, attended the conferences,…

For the last couple of months, we’ve been sketching, researching, and co-designing with community leaders and members across the country as we begin to imagine what better online spaces for local communities might look like.

While we’re still early in the process, New_ Public’s @samliebeskind shares some of our working hypotheses.

New_ Public Co-Director Deepti Doshi writes in Stanford Social Innovation Review about how flourishing local digital spaces could be the next major cornerstone of civic infrastructure.

Empowering local community stewards and finding new business models are important steps along the way.

Local Digital Spaces Are Essential Civic Infrastructure (SSIR)

With traditional community spaces underfunded and neglected, investing in the health of our online gathering places has become essential.

So with Cohost shutting down in about 24 hours, a note to every remaining social media site: You should totally rip off the "Following" pane.

Cohost had a view where (as alternative to the normal linear feed), it showed everyone you follow, sorted by last post, and you could click to see recent posts. A problem with social media is the more you post, the more space you take up. Cohost "Following" made everyone take up the same amount of space, while still prioritizing recency. A nice compromise

Does your town or neighborhood have an active local digital space?

If there’s a Facebook group or forum where you live, please share New_ Public’s new guide with the moderators. It’s full of fresh ideas for strengthening your community. Thanks in advance!

Love this idea: giving people at an IRL town hall meeting digital 'clickers' that they could use to share non-verbal feedback on the things being discussed - sort of like emoji reactions for big group in person conversation 👀

We’re seeking admins or mods of online groups for local neighborhoods, towns, and cities. Think: Facebook groups, Subreddits, email lists, and forums.

We want to learn more about these roles, and we’re looking to chat with people in the US who do this work, in exchange for a small stipend.

Please help us spread the word by passing this along 🙏

Digital Spaces for Local Neighborhoods

If you help run a public-spirited Facebook group, forum, listserv, or other kind of digital space that aims to strengthen connections between people in your local neighborhood, town, or city, we'd love to speak with you. If you're selected to participate in an interview, we're happy to offer a small stipend as a thank you for your time. About us: New_ Public is a non-profit that's working to help create better digital public spaces. We believe that the people who "steward" these spaces are critical to their success, and this research will help us explore new ways to better support people in this role.

Appreciated this post by Fabian Pfortmüller on weaving thriving communities when everyone is stretched thin.

I've been thinking a lot recently about a bunch of things he names in here: Rhythm & patience, Providing pathways for people to get involved in community stewardship, taking care of & expressing gratitude for community leaders...
