When I joined Twitter at the very start, it wasn’t constantly putting me two click away from reading the thoughts of people who hate me for being trans
This is dangerous. It has to stop
The right naturally game this algorithm. They say horrific stuff knowing it will get enough engagement to go in front of more eyes.
Everyone gets a dopamine hit from the engagement in these conversations.
It’s dangerous stuff. It scares me that people have forgotten it wasn’t always like that
I studied twitter between 2011 and 2016 for my PhD and it was really clear that people were using twitter for lots of different things. When I tried ranking tweets for people, different people would want vastly different things.
Some used it socially, some as a news platform. Some wanted things local to them. Twitter’s algorithm really only targets one thing: outrage
Mastodon’s architecture doesn’t really lend it to the kind of algorithmic trends and discovery that twitter has and I actually think that’s a good thing
