#TodayInHistory Klaus Fuchs is convicted of spying for the Soviet Union in 1950 for 9 years in prison, sharing critical information about the Manhattan Project both during and after WWII. He was behind many theoretical calculations relating to early models of the hydrogen bomb.
#TodayInHistory The March 1st Movement begins in Korea in 1910, as students in Korea begin protests against Japanese occupation. Also called the Sam-Il movement,it was brutally suppressed with 7500 killed, 16,000 injured and 46,000 arrested.

#TodayInHistory The Zimmermann Telegram is published in major newspapers in US in 1917, a secret communication between Germany and Mexico, that stated if the US were to enter WW1, they would help Mexico to recover Arizona, Texas and New Mexico.

The Zimmermann Telegram so named after the then German Foreign Secretary, was decrypted by the British intelligence. It's publication helped to drive support for US entry into WWI.

#TodayInHistory Nebraska becomes the 37th state of US in 1867, nicknamed the Cornhusker State, it's largest city is Omaha. Known for it's prairies, a major corn producer, home to Kool-Aid, Warren Buffet, it's capital is located at Lincoln.
It was these Mamluks who drove out the Christian crusaders from Egypt and Syria, establishing their own Sultanate there. In India, they established the Delhi Sultanate, via Qutub-Ud-Din Aibak, who was a Mamluk from Turkestan.

#TodayInHistory Muhammad Ali the Ottoman Governor of Egypt, invites all the elite Mamluk leaders in 1811, for a military parade, and massacres them en masse, around 3000 of them. This was done to enforce the Ottoman hold on Egypt.

The Mamluks were originally slaves, who later went on to become reputed warriors, like the knights of England. Primarily of Turkish origin, however they came later from Georgia, Central Asia, the Balkans too.

The Salem witch trials in modern times have become a metaphor for mass hysteria, where people are randomly accused without any evidence, and prosecuted. Many books, plays have been written about this.
#TodayInHistory Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne and Tituba are bought before the magistrate in Salem, MA in 1692, accused of witchcraft, beginning the notorious Salem Witch Trials, that would see 19 people executed on allegations of practicing witch craft.
#TodayInHistory Allied forces( Dutch, American, British, Australian) suffer a heavy defeat at the Battle of the Java Sea in 1942, at the hands of the Imperial Japanese navy, losing 3 destroyers and around 2300 sailors., as the entire Dutch East Indies is occupied by Japanese.
