Eulogy for the Metaverse.

“The fact that Mark Zuckerberg has clearly stepped away from the Metaverse is a damning indictment of everyone who followed him, and anyone who still considers him a visionary tech leader.”

The Metaverse, Zuckerberg's tech obession, is officially dead. ChatGPT killed it.

Mark Zuckerberg spent years trying to make the Metaverse happen, but now it has been replaced by AI and is headed to the tech industry idea graveyard.

I mean you just take out the word “bank” and you get the broader underlying history at work:

“The tale of Silicon Valley is one of ambition and management mistakes, of a chief executive who talked so much about innovation and the future that he and his lieutenants didn’t pay enough attention to the mundane but enormously important work of managing risk”

I say this as someone who’s been playing video games since Zork in the 1980s and who always thought the moralizing of people arguing video games were violent and ruining society etc was reactionary and short-sighted. But, like, shouldn’t we be further along than this, artistically, by now?
Man. The Last of Us finale is mostly a demonstration of how shallow and inadequate even narratively inventive video games are. It’s not something inherent in the medium — Papers Please, for example, is morally and ethically a much more interesting experience — it’s something about the path dependency of the industry and the audience it’s cultivated, I think?

A real monster, so good work on this ILSR 📣 "Last year, nearly half of new stores that opened in the U.S. were chain dollar stores, a degree of momentum with no parallel in the history of the retail industry"
