Just in case you still don't believe we've got a two-tiered justice system in this country, one for the rich and powerful, and one for the rest of us, New York just submitted concrete proof:

‘Travesty of justice’: Legal experts stunned over unexplained ruling helping Trump

Just hours before Donald Trump's deadline to post a $454 million bond or start to see the wheels of justice move to seize his assets, a five-judge New York appeals court panel sliced the bond amount by more than half, and handed him an extra ten days to come up with the cash.Trump is now required to...

So as we were coming back Wednesday from chatting about local history with the good folks at the landmark Farnsworth House--a National Trust site--the check engine light on my 2014 van went on. Had my mechanic, Rick, plug his computer in and it turned out to need a new thermostat. I was surprised the fix was so familiar--I actually know what a thermostat is, and have replaced them on my cars in the distant past. Given all the computerized gizmos under the hood, it was somehow comforting...

For most GOP elected officials, abortion was never a moral issue; it was strictly a political wedge issue. Women's health and the rest of it really didn't enter into it. So they're perfectly happy to drop it when the political wind changes in their districts.

A Republican congressman fighting to keep his vulnerable seat in Nebraska quietly deleted a portion of his website that bragged about his anti-abortion bonafides — signaling just how potentially harmful the GOP's current stance on abortion can be to its own party, a report stated Friday. The section ...

I see Trump wants to pardon all the terrorists who tried to overthrow the government on 1/6. Virtually all of the ones in prison are guilty of assaulting law enforcement officers. So much for "Back the Blue," I guess. But that was always "Back (some of) the Blue (some of the time)" anyway...
Just a reminder that Republicans at all levels of government are coming for your Social Security and Medicare. It's party policy; vote for any of them at your personal financial and medical peril:

Republican budget would raise the age of retirement for Social Security

A new House Republican budget calls for raising the Social Security retirement age for future retirees, restructuring Medicare and passing life at conception legislation.

Fascinating Krugman column on Ohio as a microcosm of the disconnect between perceptions and reality when it comes to economics. A good, although frustrating, read. Gift link:

This is what always happens when voters insist on electing people more interested in doing things TO their real and perceived enemies instead of doing things FOR their constituents--you wind up with a bunch of no-talent lunkheads pretending to run things.

The nation seems to be losing control of its law enforcement agencies. This sounds like another existential threat to the nation and its Constitution:

MAGA G-Men Were Very Upset About The Mar-a-Lago search - Digby's Hullabaloo

Here's an interesting little insight into the workings of the FBI. You know, the agency that the Republicans want to de-fund? Maybe they need to rethink that seeing as it's filled with MAGA insurrectionists: Hi, it’s Jason Leopold with the second installment of my new weekly newsletter, FOIA Files. If you haven’t yet, sign up now to get it delivered to

This puts me in mind of the time our country clerk got this "great" deal on punch cards back in the day--remember punch card voting. Turned out they were cheap because they were half as thick as regular punch cards and wouldn't run through the card readers. We waited until 2 or 3 a.m. for the results that year--they were usually in well before midnight. And she wasn't even a conspiracy theorist.

'$200K gone to waste' as Arizona county buys unusable 'fraud-proof' ballot paper: CNN

Tall tales about China influencing the 2020 presidential election with nefarious bamboo-filled ballots were ridiculed by most elections experts -- but not by Cochise County Recorder David Stevens.CNN's Donie O'Sullivan reported on Friday that Stevens has invested $200,000 in purported "fraud-proof" ...
