So as we were coming back Wednesday from chatting about local history with the good folks at the landmark Farnsworth House--a National Trust site--the check engine light on my 2014 van went on. Had my mechanic, Rick, plug his computer in and it turned out to need a new thermostat. I was surprised the fix was so familiar--I actually know what a thermostat is, and have replaced them on my cars in the distant past. Given all the computerized gizmos under the hood, it was somehow comforting...

This puts me in mind of the time our country clerk got this "great" deal on punch cards back in the day--remember punch card voting. Turned out they were cheap because they were half as thick as regular punch cards and wouldn't run through the card readers. We waited until 2 or 3 a.m. for the results that year--they were usually in well before midnight. And she wasn't even a conspiracy theorist.
