Sky Acquired by OpenAI

Sky, the AI automation app that Federico previewed for MacStories readers in May, has been acquired by OpenAI. Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President & Head of ChatGPT said of the deal in an OpenAI press release: We’re building a future where ChatGPT doesn’t just respond to your prompts, it helps you get things done. I reviewed the new M5 iPad Pro, with a particular focus on local LLM performance.

Unfortunately, I could not get the same 3.5x AI improvements that Apple did. And…it's complicated.

Here is my (very technical) story with lots of details and charts:

With the iPhone 17 Pro, we already had a taste of the performance Apple's new GPU architecture and Neural Accelerators can deliver. https://www.macstories.net/linked/digital-foundry-documents-the-iphone-17-pros-major-gaming-gains/

So, it's exciting to see that coming to the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro now too.

I suspect the real-world impact will be greater on the Mac side, but it looks like the M5 will likely be a nice step forward for both.

The Music app has been a source of frustration on the Mac for a long time.

Daft Music is shaping up to be a great alternative with a great design and thoughtful set of core Apple Music features.

yeah, I don't think we can rely on Apple's on-device model for image analysis folks

Chat history + app integrations on iOS is a powerful lock-in combo for Claude.

Here's why I find myself using Claude more and more instead of ChatGPT, with (another) argument in favor of apps with web APIs instead of local ones: https://www.macstories.net/linked/claudes-chat-history-and-app-integrations-as-a-form-of-lock-in/

Took two months in beta, but I feel like Liquid Glass is where it was always supposed to be in the latest iOS 26 beta 6.

Still glassy, but better balance (with variable opacity and other clever tricks) for legibility. Lots of fast and bouncy animations all around.

It's definitely been a process, but I think this feels pretty good now.
