@skippingmoonrocks I had a much longer reply, but didn't realize the character limit.

Short version: If you're on a Mac, a good way to just start getting a feel is Garageband. It's part of the OS, so requires minimal investment to get used to some of the conventions, and comes with a fair amount of useful instrumentation. From there, things may lead you in a variety of directions, with a very wide range of attendant cost.
