One of the things I see very often in the 'Why do you want to join .art' box on the account form is "... and maybe one day I'll post my own art."
*hugs you all* Your art is wonderful and I haven't even seen it yet. It's wonderful because you made it and it came from your heart. You had an idea and you did something creative and that in itself is awesome.
Don't be scared. Share your creativity with us <3 If you're feeling especially vulnerable about your art, add the #ArtBrave hashtag.
@tze @axbom Just look @pixelfed, its an ActivityPub based photo sharing service (very a lá Insta), but you don't need an account there, you can follow those accounts from you Mastodon account.
That's the real power of a public protocol. @Gargron doesn't run this whole community, just a really popular instance and OSS product. It's like Gmail is to email, just one host, but you're still free to use Fastmail or Hotmail or your ISPs email service, or host your own.
@tze @axbom I think this misses the point. Since Mastodon runs on the ActivityPub protocol (like SMTP is to email), if you don't like how things are run you can find a host that does things your way, or make your own, **and you can still communicate with your friends over here**!
That's why there's no monopoly. I like the fact that things aren't aggressively anonymous over here, but if you don't then find a place that supports that, and you can still be part of this big web.
Did you know that when you put .rss behind your Mastodon profile URL, you get an RSS feed? 😎
Unlike Twitter, when you 'like' (Favourite) something here, it doesn't share that interaction with your followers.
If you've found a post or a piece of art that you've enjoyed - boost that toot!
Instead of deactivating and losing my bird profile, I decided instead to keep it as a pointer here, and to protect my old handle. And I've thrown ten bucks at https://tweetdeleter.com/ to clean house.
@dankim312 since you're nerd enough to be all about distributed, non-locked-in systems, might I introduce you to my old friend: XMPP?
