@cfauske @mikagratzke @histodons @academicchatter Yeah, I've definitely been the author who starts writing and realizes that I want to write something other than what I pitched. I really appreciate the advice for detailed abstracts--there's often at least a year between the abstract and the deadline (which means most will have a year gap between thinking and writing) and the details upfront will help everyone.
@mikagratzke @histodons @academicchatter Maybe worth identifying an essay for each section that I or the other editor felt comfortable writing just in case (and not taking one at the beginning)--or senior scholars who could step in
@avielroshwald @mikagratzke @histodons @academicchatter I think the substantive abstracts (and maybe an outline) is a good idea, thank you!
@cfauske @histodons @academicchatter I love this idea, thank you!
@cfauske @histodons @academicchatter 100% on emerging scholars. That's one of the most exciting parts of it for me--getting to push the field with new ideas. At the same time, emerging scholars are generally the ones who are the most pressed, and I hope I can smooth the way as much as I can for them.
@mikagratzke @histodons @academicchatter It does feel like a heck of a lot of favor-calling-in. And I think we'd have to have a few back up plans for drop-outs because [looks around, gestures in all directions]
@bstacey Did you find the video chats useful? I feel like it could go either way depending on the contributors.....
@aristofontes @histodons @academicchatter Oh, good point, I hadn't even thought about that yet. But you're right, the ground rules from the beginning are key, otherwise writers (and we) will flail around

Ok, academics, what are the pluses and minuses of editing essay collections for academic presses?

Any tips or tricks for making this a positive experience for us editors and for the people we ask to contribute (considering none of us will make any money)?
