'Holy air encased in stone'ยน Vikings once stood here. The underground crypt underneath St Wystan's church in Repton. Probably started in the C8th as a baptistry that seemingly became a royal and saintly ossiary for Mercian kings and the king-saint Wystan. Viking Great Army members would have been in this very space in 873-4 as they overwintered at the royal abbey of the Mercians, an Anglo-Saxon kingdom destroyed by the Great Army.

Severe winter weather will be arriving this week, so it's a great time to be reminded of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists advice on how to work (and, importantly, when NOT to work) on wintry outdoor sites โžก๏ธ ow.ly/iQty50LWwyJ

#BeSafe on site, and only travel if safe to do so.

We're proud of our long-term involvement in Scottish archaeology and of our past work with Forestry and Land Scotland, who produced this magnificent 2014 poster detailing some of our contour planning and terrain modelling for Castle O'er, an #IronAge hillfort in south-west Scotland. Poster includes data from Historic Environment Scotland, the main image was by EM Photo and the text by Matt Ritchie | #HillfortsWednesday

Doing well! A wonderful #MedievalMonday: a waterlogged castle well on the R581 Doneraile to Newtwopothouse Road Realignment produced a leather strap for us in 2011. Conservation revealed a circa 14th-century high-status horse harness decorated with gilded studs emblazoned with rampant lions in sinister ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฆ
