Cargo ships are finding that using sails allows them to reduce fuel usage by *one third*. Only 30 of the world's 60,000 cargo ships are wind-assisted right now, but it appears that the entire industry has just figured out that it would be foolish *not* to put sails on their ships. The potential reduction in emissions—CO2 and otherwise—would serve as a significant reduction in the rate of climate change. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/03/climate/wind-powered-ships-climate.html
In Shipping, a Push to Slash Emissions by Harnessing the Wind

More ships are running on wind power, as the global industry tries to fight climate change. One concept has backing from Abba, the Swedish pop stars.

Spotted at my local leisure centre, in the car park, this wonderful piece of whimsy…

Partially related to my previous post: Did you know that all coal contains trace amounts of nuclear material? Mostly Uranium and Thorium. Burning the coal releases this nuclear material into the atmosphere! (Who could have thought).

In a 2009 report by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, it was estimated that all US coal plants combined emit more, much more, nuclear waste than all US nuclear plants combined *consume* in nuclear material.

"More than 1,000 “super-emitter” sites gushed the potent greenhouse gas methane into the global atmosphere in 2022"

Hard to know what the most shocking part of this story is, but just the idea that 25% of current warming is from methane and **40%** of that methane is from entirely avoidable fossil fuel facility leaks is horrifying. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/mar/06/revealed-1000-super-emitting-methane-leaks-risk-triggering-climate-tipping-points #methane #climate #fossilfuels

Revealed: 1,000 super-emitting methane leaks risk triggering climate tipping points

Vast releases of gas, along with future ‘methane bombs’, represent huge threat – but curbing emissions would rapidly reduce global heating

Was reminded that it doesn’t help at all with ocean acidification. Earth needs less carbon no way around it.
