Every 10 second video created with OpenAi's Sora burns 1 Kilowatt hour - which is more than boiling 4 full kettles of water.
That's over 10 per cent of the energy used in a day for an average German household. On one 10 second video.
And that video emits 466 grams of carbon. equal to boiling 15 kettles in the UK, or 7 in Germany.
Overall, the Sora 2 platform emits nearly a quarter of the carbon of Meta/Facebook in 2024.
And for what exactly?

AWS outage update:
Customers of Eight Sleep – a smart bed company that connects to the internet to control the temperature and incline of a person’s bed – found they were unable to adjust the bed or the temperature of the bed during the outage because they were unable to connect to the bed in their phone app.

My bed was ok.

“When we talk about the AI supply chain, we’re talking about one of the most resource-intensive industrial systems on the planet. Every AI model you interact with is the endpoint of a long, complex and often opaque chain of extraction, processing, manufacturing, computation and disposal."

I spoke to Sara Marcucci, founder of the AI + Planetary Justice Alliance, for Truthdig to find out more about AI’s hidden impact:

Headline: "Germany races to catch up in artificial intelligence"

How about Germany race to fix their railway funding problem? Or to catch up in green industries, instead of clinging hard to fossil fuel tech? Or race to lighten the insane bureaucratic system that's strangling the country?

Get your fucking priorities straight, for crying out loud.

Meta's "ground breaking" AI-led research that discovered 135 new materials for efficient carbon removal - was essentially rubbish,. according to researchers at Heriot Watt Uni. None of the materials worked - some were simply hallunicated.

Meta’s AI climate tool raised false hope of CO₂ removal, scientists say

It is an unshakeable article of faith in Silicon Valley that technology brings abundance. And in abundance. More wealth, more stuff, even more technology. More of everything.

But now with Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson's book also called Abundance, influential progressive voices are calling for it too.

which strand of abundance we want: the nasty abundance or the nice abundance.

Abundance itself is not up for discussion: whatever happens, we’re getting it.

Technology and the abundance myth

How abundance will only lead us to climate collapse even more quickly.
