Ph.D. in Information Systems | Department of Informatics

The Ph.D. program in Information Systems trains students to become professional researchers in the areas of Information Systems, Science and Technology. Unlike other degrees programs, those in Ph.D. programs not only acquire knowledge, but are also trained to produce new knowledge.

I'm recruiting 1-2 PhD students for Fall 2025 as I begin my journey as an assistant professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in January 2025. Let's explore the future of intelligent creation tools for AR/VR experiences. ✨ Details about my advising philosophy and research vision: https://raynez.art/join-us/.

🚀 Please help spread the word 🙏

Our swaggy Lei Zhang @raynez

Explain your research in simple terms (ELI5): 🤖
- Build easy tools for non-tech people to create in AR and VR
- Invent new ways to help people be creative and work together
- Focus on making creativity fun and accessibleđź’ˇ

What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
- Sometimes I make my own clothes (e.g., designing and sewing).đź‘–

Congrats to @andresmh on receiving the Graduate Mentoring Award from the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning and Princeton's Graduate School!

“He was always available to meet and provided actionable feedback,” said one student. “He was also kind and supportive. Those who know Andrés will agree he has an amazing ring of positive energy.”

4/5 We found that digital handcrafting can encourage effort by evoking a sense of agency and enabling people to craft gift-like personal stories beyond physical limits. It also enables authentic connection, effortful *yet lightweight* communication, and feelings of presence.
3/5 We designed and evaluated Auggie, an iOS app that encourages partners to create digitally handcrafted AR experiences for each other (check out our system demo here: https://youtu.be/_gdCz1lztZ8). We conducted a two-week-long field study with 30 participants (15 pairs).
Auggie: Encouraging Effortful Communication through Handcrafted Digital Experiences

2/5 Digital communication is often brisk and automated nowadays. Lightweight interactions such as auto-completed messages or "likes" can decrease the meaningfulness of communication. We thus designed a communication system that enables versatile, personal expressions of effort.
